Lorrie dropped her car off at home, then picked up the DART train to Tara Street Station and walked the short distance for a bit of fresh air. It was also all the exercise she planned to take that day apart from the return walk home. She’d picked up a Thistledown membership brochure from the pile in reception but it was only for research purposes. Visiting two gyms in two hours was more gyms than she’d visited in the last year or that she was likely to visit in the next one.

The Cyn Byn was the type of gym that she might consider joining that is if she’d either the time or inclination to keep fit. Set in the centre of Dublin, it attracted city dwellers and workers alike, unlike the outskirt market of Thistledown. There was also no car park attached.

This time the manager was a woman who looked her age, not that she’d ever admit to what that might be. Mrs Jennie Maguire. Thirty going on fifty and with a peculiarly immovable brow that screamed of Botox or quite possibly fillers. Lorrie liked the woman’s spray-on leggings but that’s as far as she was prepared to commit.

There was no offer of a drink, which made her regret declining Gary’s kind gesture. There was also no preamble.

‘I take it you’re here about Avril, God rest her soul.’

‘Yes. What can you tell me?’

‘Avril was very good at what she did, very good indeed. We were very sad to lose her but it was perfectly understandable under the circumstances.’

‘I believe she was attacked?’

‘That’s right.’

‘How did it happen?’

‘We have a very strict admittance policy, you know, and something like this has never happened before.’

‘A targeted attack then?’

‘Certainly looks that way. Avril had a very popular yoga class with a dedicated weekly membership. On the morning it happened she was in the studio doing some preliminary warm-up stretches when she says one of the clients assaulted her.’

‘You’re choosing your words very carefully there.’

‘There was no proof.’ Jennie swiped her hair back, tucking the platinum ends back from where they’d escaped their scrunchie. ‘No cameras allowed within the building for obvious reasons and, as it allegedly happened ten minutes before the class, no witnesses.’

‘But you think she was assaulted, don’t you?’

Jennie blinked, clearly coming to a decision, hopefully the right one. ‘I saw her straight after. She could barely walk. Had to be helped into her car by one of the instructors. It was the last day she worked with us after a perfect five years, so, yes, I know she was attacked but I won’t go on record if that’s what you mean.’

‘Why not?’

‘If what happened gets out, I’ve been told I’ll lose my job. We can’t have customers leaving in droves. It’s hard enough trying to expand our client base without this.’

‘And did Avril say who the client was, Mrs Maguire?’
